Waterfalls

A waterfall experience in one of the last true wilderness areas on Earth is a moment in time you’ll remember forever.

Millions of years ago the Kimberley coast was formed by shifts in the earths tectonic plates, and since then it has been shaped by the flow of rivers and the Wet season rainfall.

Long drop waterfalls such as the King George Falls tower over the northern coast, while at Kings Cascades water tumbles over a terrace of Kimberley sandstone. At Punamii-Uunpuu (Mitchell Falls) the Mitchell River pours over four levels, where water falls from one mesmerising emerald water pool to the next.

Unique to the Kimberley Coast, the tidal movement at the Horizontal Falls (Garaanngaddim) creates a phenomenon where the waterfall appears in the water itself, and at Montgomery Reef the ebb and flow of the tides produce a twice daily waterfall show as the reef appears from the ocean.

Some of the more remote waterfalls are only accesible by cruise ship, but scenic flight options for the Horizontal Falls, Punamii-Uunpuu and Montgomery Reef mean that these locations are accessible for half-day to overnight tours.

Replenished by rains over the Wet Season, waterfalls along the Kimberley Coast are at their best during the early part of cruising season, starting in March each year.

The King George River plunges over an ancient sandstone cliff into tidal waters, creating the truly astounding spectacle of Oomari (King George Falls) – Western Australia’s highest twin waterfalls.

Described by David Attenborough as “one of the greatest natural wonders of the world”, Garaanngaddim Horizontal Falls is a natural phenomenon that is as intriguing as it is stunning.

Montgomery Reef, in the Lalang-garram/Camden Sound Marine Park on the Kimberley Coast, is one of the most spectacular places in the Kimberley. Covering some 300 square kilometres across the Indian Ocean, Montgomery Reef, or  Yowjab  in the Dambimangari language seems to…
