This pretty little beach is located a few minutes’ drive from the centre of the historic pearling town and overlooks the stunning turquoise coloured Roebuck Bay.
Town Beach is a popular draw-card for holidaying families. Its spectacular calm aqua water makes for perfect photo opportunities.
Bring your own picnic and spread out on the grass or on one of the picnic tables or enjoy dishes from the café near the water’s edge. A bonus for parents is the small water playground, ideal for the children to cool down.
Staircase to the Moon
Town Beach is also a popular gathering point to see the natural attraction of the Staircase to the Moon on certain dates throughout the year. The moon rises above the exposed mudflats creating an optical illusion in the darkened sky of stairs reaching to the moon. The Town Beach Markets often complement this event and provide an opportunity for you to purchase craft items, dinner from the stalls and relax and enjoy the entertainment.

Flying boat wrecks
The Kimberley region has some of the largest tides in the world and Broome is no exception with large stretches of beach appearing daily as the tide rapidly recedes. If you are prepared to get a little wet and don’t mind an early start, a morning walk along the tidal flats from Town Beach at very low tide on certain dates throughout the year will reward you with a close up view of the rusted remains of the Catalina flying boats from the Second World War. It takes approximately an hour to walk there and an hour to walk back Town Beach. Check with the Broome Visitor Centre for accurate times of when the shifting tide reveals this piece of history. Alternatively a hovercraft tour can take you to the site where you can wander around these relics and learn of their fascinating history.
Broome Pioneer Cemetery
Town Beach is also the location of Broome Pioneer Cemetery. This is a small cemetery of just eleven gravesites, as well as memorial plots and commemorative sites. The first graves at this site were of men who had died at sea. The first burial, of Pemberton Walcott, Inspector of Pearl Shell Fisheries, took place in 1883, the same year that Broome was gazetted as town.
There is also a caravan park located beside Town Beach with one of the best views in Broome across Roebuck Bay.
